Accessibility
REALM is intended to be understandable and usable by as many people as possible, including people who use keyboards, screen readers, magnification, captions, or reduced-motion settings.
What the website supports
- Semantic headings, landmarks, lists, navigation, and page structure.
- A keyboard-visible skip link and clearly visible focus indicators.
- Keyboard-operable navigation, controls, disclosures, and class selectors.
- Readable text sizing, line spacing, and contrast tested against the site's dark surfaces.
- Responsive layouts that reflow without horizontal scrolling at narrow widths.
- Reduced animation when the operating system requests reduced motion.
- Alternative text for meaningful images and descriptive titles for embedded videos.
- English captions supplied through the embedded YouTube player.
The standard we work toward
The website is being improved toward WCAG 2.2 Level AA. This is a statement of intent and current work, not a claim of formal certification. Automated checks are combined with keyboard, screen-size, zoom, and manual visual testing because automated tools cannot detect every accessibility barrier.
Where access is not yet equivalent
Some downloadable material was created before this accessibility pass and has limitations:
- The framework PDF has selectable text but is not a tagged PDF. The framework resource page, web overview, glossary, examples, and Markdown edition provide accessible HTML or plain-text routes to the same core concepts.
- The comic PDFs are visual, image-only publications. Every issue now has an HTML reading edition with the story synopsis and narrative sequence. The visual PDFs remain available as the original artwork.
- YouTube captions are currently auto-generated and may contain occasional errors in names or specialist REALM vocabulary.
We will keep improving these alternatives and will prioritize any barrier reported by a reader.
